Overview:

Virellos is the largest and southernmost of the Mist Islands, a towering landmass of dense forest and jagged cliffs that forms a natural curtain between the open seas and the heart of the Omich Nisi archipelago. It stands like a sentinel at the edge of the mists, absorbing the brunt of storms and deterring unwanted visitors with its harsh terrain and impenetrable canopy.

Description:

A land of shadow and silence, Virellos is dominated by towering trees with moss-covered trunks, their canopies so thick that daylight barely touches the forest floor. The island’s geography is uneven and wild—craggy uplands fall into vine-choked ravines, while foggy glades conceal hidden clearings, ancient stone altars, and long-forgotten ruins. Its edges rise in steep, sheer cliffs, carved by centuries of crashing waves and winds. Wildlife here is fierce and strange, including oversized insects, mammals adapted to gliding and floating on the strong updrafts and predators adapted to stalking through mist and shadow.

History:

Virellos’ history is steeped in legend, with some claiming it was once the dwelling place of Rezza Oir during her time in Staterum. The towering peaks and sheer cliffs of Omich-Nisi offered her solitude, while the racing winds provided the perfect currents to glide upon. Now, however, the land lies eerily still, its air thick with mist that never stirs, covering much of its landscape.

The island’s isolation and rugged terrain have preserved it as a haven for bizarre and ancient fauna. Even the pirates of Omich-Nisi, known for colonizing the most hostile of shores, have largely left Virellos untouched. Its dense forests, treacherous ravines, and prowling predators have made it a place best admired from afar.

Significance:

Virellos holds its significance through sheer geography. Its immense mass acts both as a shield against the open sea and as a natural basin for the dense mists that shroud the Mist Islands. Though it offers little in the way of resources or shelter itself, the island’s imposing presence provides strategic cover for the archipelago’s inhabitants, concealing their movements and strongholds from prying eyes.

Notable Features:

  • Talam’s Ribs: Jagged, bone-white spires of rock line the southern edge of Virellos, rising from the sea like the ribs of some ancient leviathan. These treacherous formations force ships to give the island a wide berth—both to avoid being dashed upon the stone and to steer clear of pirate-infested waters.
  • Ungol Ravine: Carving deep into the northeastern cliffs, Ungol Ravine is a dark, web-choked chasm home to enormous spiders. Their silk, prized for its strength and flexibility, is carefully harvested by the pirates of Omich-Nisi for use in bridgework, rigging, and traps.
  • Floating Fields: A marvel of Virellos’ unique geology, the Floating Fields are vast mats of buoyant flora suspended above a massive sinkhole. Fed by a constant updraft from numerous converging cave systems, these airborne plants have evolved to ride the perpetual currents, forming drifting green canopies that ripple like sails in the mist.
  • Rezza’s Eye: A high outcrop on the island’s eastern tip juts defiantly into the Mare Sanctum Sea. Atop it stands a lone watchtower built by the Mist Walkers, serving both as a lookout for merchant prey and an early warning post against any who dare trespass into the archipelago.

Local Legends or Stories:

Deep within the shadowed depths of Ungol Ravine, legend speaks of a monstrous matriarch—an ancient spider queen so vast she could dwarf a full grown dragon. Said to predate even the Age of Darkness, this grotesque horror has dwelled beneath the island for centuries, possibly millennia, birthing generations of broodlings in utter darkness. No pirate dares to delve too far into the ravine’s heart, and it is whispered that even the Gods once chose to leave her undisturbed.

Another tale tells of a hidden tribe of harpies said to embody the purest forms of wind, song, and flight. These elusive beings are believed to be the progenitors of all harpy-kind, kept safe in a secluded sanctuary built by Rezza Oir herself. According to legend, they still dwell somewhere within the high reaches of Virellos, so shy and hidden that none in the current age have ever laid eyes on them.

Current Status:

Today, Virellos remains largely untouched by civilization. Its dense forests, sheer cliffs, and shrouding mists have preserved the island in a near-primordial state. The Mist Walkers occasionally harvest resources from its fringes—particularly silk from Ungol Ravine—but few dare venture deep within. Though it serves as a natural bulwark for the Mist Islands, its true nature remains elusive, cloaked in legend and watched from afar with wary respect. Whatever secrets slumber in Virellos, they are left to their silence.
